Dr. Shih believes in a holistic approach to medicine and follows core principles of naturopathic medicine which are: do no harm, identify and treat the causes, doctor as teacher, treat the whole person, emphasize prevention and support the healing power of nature. She is trained in the natural techniques and therapies including acupuncture/Asian medicine, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathic medicine, physical medicine, lifestyle counseling and hydrotherapy and uses these to improve health on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

Dr. Shih believes that at the most basic level, the health of an athlete, body, mind and spirit, will dictate the health of their performance in a particular sport. Naturopathic medicine has a wide scope of practice and thus can influence sport in its entirety, starting from building and maintaining performance to facilitation of injury. The foundation of naturopathic sports medicine should focus on the health of an athlete. The naturopathic modalities can be used, either singly or in conjunction, to preserve and recover basic health of a person; this will ultimately boost immunity to reduce illness and thus increase possible training time. In addition, naturopathic medicine can also increase health and efficiency of body systems, such as respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and also improve muscle efficiency and growth which then can significantly improve performance. Finally, mental and emotional health can also be improved which then translates into improved focus and spirit, both of which are required for sport. Naturopathic treatment can be implemented on a regular basis to maintain health of muscles, keep desired ranges of motion and hasten recovery time between workouts. In the unfortunate case of injury, one can hasten the speed of healing and, more importantly, ensure proper healing. Improper healing of muscles and joints can result in weakness, decreased range of motion and pain. All of these impede performance in sports, decrease training time and lower quality of life, and thus should be minimized.

In addition to musculoskeletal related conditions, Naturopathic medicine can treat issues including but not limited to digestion, respiration, cardiovascular health, skin, reproduction, neurological problems, weight loss, hormone imbalances as well as just improving overall health and well being.
